{ LINK: Black Fraternity Comes Out in Force for Their Undocumented Brother - COLORLINES }
Yesterday at the Center for American Progress, Sam Fulwood III introduced us to an young immigrant’s story that’s all too familiar, but with a ray of hope. Mario Perez is a 22-year-old college student in Nacogdoches, Texas, who came to the United States with his family as a five-year-old, and who didn’t find out about his own undocumented status until he was a high school senior. Engaged to his girlfriend and on his way to engineering grad school, Mario’s world came crashing down with a single routine police stop in December of last year. The difference between Mario and any other undocumented college kid? He turned to his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha — the nation’s oldest black Greek-letter fraternity.
…
saw the link to this while reading the COLORLINES story that radicallyhottoff linked here (which is also great).

“In the post, I also mentioned that when the state of Nebraska debated a similar proposal, anti-choice groups strongly opposed denying undocumented women prenatal care because it put “borders ahead of babies.”
It turns out that many of their worst fears have come true. The Lincoln Journal Star reports that preventing undocumented women from accessing prenatal care assistance has had “dramatic effects”:
The elimination one year ago of Medicaid funding for prenatal care for about 1,600 low-income women has had dramatic effects, doctors and health clinic administrators reported Wednesday. At least five babies have died. Women are traveling 155 miles to get prenatal care. Babies have been delivered at clinics, in ambulances and hospital emergency rooms. […]
Andrea Skolkin, chief executive officer of One World Community Health Centers in Omaha, said that in the past year, only about half of uninsured women are receiving any prenatal care. The health center has more premature births to uninsured women, compared to insured women. Uninsured mothers were twice as likely to deliver through cesarean section, which is more expensive. […] Four infants died in utero at the Columbus health center, she said. In the previous seven years, the clinic had never had an in utero death.”
—
right now somewhere there is a think tank deciding if they can get away with reframing this as “it is a tragedy—but the mother’s should not have been hear to begin with. they made the choice to commit an illegal act, and these are the tragic consequences of her actions. it points all the more to why we need to increase militarization at the border and provide more funding to ICE (etc)—we will be helping to end tragedies like this forever.”
the super compassionate considerate militarization and criminalization of Teh Illegalz. kinder gentler words to justify white supremacist murder.

I live here. Fuck these putos. But, shout-out to One World Community Health Center who is committed to improving the lives of immigrants (legal residents or otherwise) and, further, marginalized peoples in Nebraska. I’m included in the former group. If you can donate to them, please do so. If you live in Omaha, please consider volunteering at their South O location.

{ LINK: How have you navigated the IL school system? [Survey] }
iyjl:
I was assigned 20 hours of community service as punishment for the Georgia action and I’m slowly serving my time at ICIRR. As part of it I’ve helped make this survey. Our answers will give us a better idea of the needs of undocumented youth, and how to help shape the resourceswe’ve won through the Illinois Dream Act. Please take 2 and half minutes to take this survey and tell us how you’ve navigated the IL school system.
Only two requirements:
- You are or were undocumented during high school,
- You are currently or have been a student at a high school in Illinois.
Editor’s Note: This survey was put together by David Ramirez, IYJL organizer. Your answers will go to him, and will only be used to inform the work we are doing on IL dream act. If you find that you would like to share tips or advice with other undocumented youth, send us your thoughts, and we will consider them for publication on this blog. E-mail us!

civil disobedience en san bernardino california hoy
Seven arrested - Need help now!!Hello all,
Just a couple of hours ago seven brave undocumented students were arrested in San Bernardino. They declared themselves undocumented and unafraid at San Bernardino Valley College, a campus where the police has arrested students and turned them over to ICE. They have risked it all to show their peers and their community (not just the IE but all of CA) that it is time to come out of the shadows and take ownership of our lives.

Anything helps! Please do the following:

{ Help Me Get to College: Undocumented Student and his Last College Semester }
Dear Contributor,
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post regarding my college situation. As many know by now, I am an undocumented student who is about to graduate from a public University in Florida with a dual degree in PoliSci and International Affairs. Because of my status I am unable to receive any amount of financial aide, and private scholarships for undocumented students here in Florida are scare.
HELP ME GET TO COLLEGE, DONATE BY CLICKING HERE
Thanks to recent donations I have been able to gather $150 to fund my next semester! Thank you to everyone who has contributed to my cause and has reblogged y post, you have no idea how much this means to me.
However there is still a long way to go to reach my goal. Thank to some pro-migrant organizations I have been afforded some “Coming Out of the Shadows T-shirts” to hand out to donors. These shirts come in black and say “I am UNDOCUMENTED” in the front and the organization sponsoring them in the back.
Every contribution of 25$ and above will receive a shirt (sizes S, M, and L) at no cost [FREE SHIPPING]. I want to take this time to thank you all for helping me out in my time of need, an assure you to keep everyone posted in these finals weeks before school.
Please consider reposting, sharing, or passing along this post. I am attaching my undocumented story in the following post.
Here is a screen shot of the shirt and a widget for you all to keep track of donations. If you are willing to donate consider that this ChiIn directs you to donate via Paypal if you so desire.
signal boost
[image above: front of t-shirt: white text on black cloth. text reads: “I AM UN•DOC•U•MENT•ED (ən-ˈdä-kyə-ˌmen-təd)”.]
(if you can’t read the ChipIn widget, it’s at $175 as of this post. 5 people have donated so far. the goal is $1,000 and the end date is August 22nd.)

{ LINK: 7 undocumented students arrested at immigration rally in San Bernardino }
Political science student Ju Hong, 21, a graduate of Alameda High School, had traveled to San Bernardino Valley College for a “coming out” rally for undocumented students from across the state to share their stories.
Friends say Hong intended to make a statement, but they are worried that the arrest could trigger his deportation. Through the federal Secure Communities program, which has been implemented in all of California’s counties, anyone arrested and booked in a county jail gets fingerprints sent to a federal database monitored by agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

{ LINK: Raising Hell }
Why the anger? Because the sanctity a human life was violated today. Because Hope did not get to hug Andy, to squeeze his hand and feel his heart beat before he was deported. Because she last saw her son 85 days ago when dropping him off for work. Because we are being openly lied to by this administration, DHS, ICE, and Democratic leaders and are expected to just take it lying down. “Oh, don’t you remember? You’re undocumented. Powerless. Worthless. So I can treat you however I want to, and come out looking like your savior.” When the DREAM Act finally does pass, look to see who takes credit the most vocally.
At least uber-conservative Republicans and Tea Party members have the guts to look in our eyes and tell us how much they despise us and will actively pursue policies to ‘deport them all.’ At least they’re honest. The true danger lies in entrusting the lives and future of the undocumented community in the hands of those who do not deserve our trust.
For to deserve our trust you must support us, and to support us, you must acknowledge, accept and equally fight for all undocumented youth and the larger community – from the high school dropout to the valedictorian, the janitor and construction worker to the graduate student, the palest to the darkest, the cisgendered to the queer and/or transgendered, the English-only to the multilingual, the single parents to the caretakers. We are all worthy of having our humanity and our life experiences respected.
So yes, we will raise hell until we are all deemed worthy, and I am tired of apologizing if the hell we raise inconveniences you.
We will raise hell to eradicate the notion that DREAM-Act eligible youth are the only undocumented youth worth fighting for.
We will raise hell to expose the lies and hypocrisy of anyone who claims to support undocumented youth whilst consciously committing to their further oppression, regardless of whether the wear the label of ally or nativist, Republican or Democrat, lead organizer or executive director.
We will raise hell to highlight and to hold the administration, DHS, and ICE accountable for their targeted and intentional hunt of undocumented youth and the undocumented community that they claim to be “low-priority.”
We will raise hell to make our voices heard, to where they rumble as they enter your ears and travel down and shake you at your very core.
We will raise hell against the injustice of silence.
We will raise hell to restore the dignity and honor of our families, to refuse to ever repent for the imaginary ‘sins of our parents.’
We will raise hell to break free of these chains that this society has convinced us to place on ourselves.
We will raise hell to nurture the fire of hope, of community, of identity and of home.
We will raise hell even if our voices crack, our throats burn, our ears sting, our feet ache, and our hearts grow weary because we are fighting for our lives.
We will raise hell for Andy, for his survival.
We will raise hell for Hope, for as she said yesterday,
“I ache for my son.”
I am down to raise hell. I raise a lot of hell in a practical and solution-oriented way.

“Those who argue against the use of “illegal” as a way to refer to immigrants say that while it may be illegal to reside in the United States without authorization, it’s dehumanizing to refer to a person as illegal, among other things. Others still argue that undocumented is a euphemism that is no better, and that the proper term should be “unauthorized.” And some, of course, prefer “illegal.” Readers, what do you think?”
—
The ‘undocumented’ vs. ‘illegal’ debate continues | Multi-American
hm. let’s be *clear* on who the “some” are that “prefer” illegal. it was a massive campaign by *white supremacist nativists* that got the “neutral” press to change from undocumented worker to illegal immigrant—and it’s STILL the *white supremacist nativists* that “prefer” illegal and who will “reasonably” and “politely” let you know that they are simply following the rules which is why they are protesting and starting boycotts and theatening defunding when a particular press calls the illegalz “undocumented worker.”
i mean—if we’re going to have a public debate about this shit, let’s get ALL the shit out there. Trying to remain neutral through decontextualization and asking readers what they think rather than demonstrating what your OWN opinion is and why—all when you haven’t told the readers the entire story does a disservice to the reader, to the people who we’re all attempting to label, and to the “press” who is attempting to remain credible even as they compromise on word choice with white supremacists.
