To:  United Nations

People of the world, please do not stand by and let Muamar Gaddafi Kill the people of Libya for merely trying to voice their request for Democracy, as many countries have done successfully. By signing this petition you are urging the United Nations to intervene, and to do the best they can convince Muamar Gaddafi to step down as the leader of Libya. Medical Aid is requested, as is media coverage in Libya. Gaddafi will massacre the masses if we remain silent. Please act quickly, time is of the Essence.

grrspit:

I think it’s time for a response to this, no?  Peacekeeping troops, something?  This is reminding me horrifically of the early days of the Rwandan genocide, when the Clinton administration’s response was, “Well, we don’t think a genocide has occurred, but acts of genocide have occurred.”  Hopefully the Obama administration can come up with something better?

Which isn’t to say that it’s the job of the US to police the world, but surely we can use our influence to get the UN to send peacekeeping troops…or something?

*trigger warning* for photo of dead bodies below (not very graphic but still upsetting)

NOTE: i’m kinda uncomfortable with the way thevisualpoet framed this (and the language in/surrounding the petition itself).  but i’m not thinking clearly today, plus i’m not even sure i have a place in this conversation, so i’ll leave any critiques to people who know their shit.

thevisualpoet:

Amnesty International has has launched a petition to the US president and the US representative to the UN, calling for immediate action against the attrocities taking place in Libya.

“Dear President Obama,

I urge you to play a leadership role within the UN Security Council to ensure that a mission is sent to Libya immediately to investigate events that have left hundreds of protesters dead.

Colonel al-Gaddafi and his government appear to be prepared to kill an unlimited number of people to stay in power. The international community needs to act now to put a stop to this. […]

The Security Council must also put an immediate end to the export or transfer of all arms and military equipment to Libya until the risk of serious human rights violations has ended.  All states will be complicit in further killings if they do not cease transfers immediately. […]”

So, if you feel you can nothing but watch as the horrendous events unfold in Libya, you are wrong. Luckily we live in a democracy and we can make known to our leaders what we expect from them.

Tell President Obama and the world what we expect of them now!

Sign the petition and reblog this. Your signature can actually help save lives.

Dear fellow tumblrs, this is so horribly. I want to cry. I feel how I don’t let this come to close to me, but it is there right in front of all of us. And as I’m writing this I feel hope that this petition can accomplish something, it gives me hope. And sure enough it gives hope to every single Libyan still fearing for their life. Let’s do this and spread this petition!

It took me 45 minutes to create this post. And one minute to sign the petition.
