{ Please, people, as a self-identified crazy person I can live with you using crazy in connections such as “crazy fun” and “crazy coincidence”, but please do not use crazy or insane to denote the reason for a person’s criminal, violent or abhorrent actions. This is seriously harmful to people who are actually crazy. }

as a self-identified crazy person, DON’T USE “CRAZY” unless you self-identify as “crazy.” this is the only way you can reclaim a word, if it’s actually ever been used against you.

{ Muammar Gaddafi is many things: a despot, a monster, a tyrant. What he is NOT is crazy, insane, unhinged, psychotic, schizo, or mad. Kindly don’t use ableist slurs to describe this piss-poor excuse for a human being. *I* am crazy. *He* is not. }

& in case you needed a refresher: this post & commentary.

I feel like ableism is a Thing that’s often overlooked even by otherwise progressive and mindful people, simply because it doesn’t come up much in conversation as much as misogyny, heterosexism, racism, etc. do. Which is bad! So I’m gonna waffle about this topic a bit.

There are lots and lots of very adequate and accurate ways of describing what a piece of shit Gaddafi is and falling back on things like “crazy” or “insane” is just lazy and inaccurate, as well as offensive. I doubt Gaddafi is like, say, Stalin was, i.e. literally mentally ill. And even if he were, lots of people are and manage to not be murderous shitheel dictators. I’m one of them!

So please, don’t try to push Gaddafi’s crimes onto “well HE’S INSANE”. If he is — I honestly don’t know, some dictators are legitimately paranoid, delusional, etc., again, see Stalin — it merely gives deeper context to his crimes, it does not fully explain them, excuse them or, god fucking forbid, absolve him.

This has sure been a spiel. It probably didn’t make a whole lot of sense or have an actual point, I fear.

[Trigger Warning for a fuckload of ableism]

I am really sorry if this offends you, but no, I will keep calling him insane.  Sane people don’t DO that.  Maybe he’s a different kind of “insane” than the OP, but he’s still unhinged.  Nobody just goes off and commands the slaughter of people.  Maybe he’s power-crazy, but whatever it is, it is deeper than just killing people for his own amusement.  And no, his particular version of insanity does not forgive him for his crimes, but it does explain them.  Please don’t assume that your kind of “insane” is the only kind of insane that is out there.

Let’s play bingo okay? okay. And yes, I added the warning.

  • I will do a fauxpology so then I can offend you and you can’t tell me anything.
  • I see your point BUT I WILL NOT GIVE UP MY ABLEIST SLUR OF CHOICE!
  • I will make dichotomies between ‘sane’ and ‘insane’ peeps, make sure to point out ableism. It’s not like there are peeps *this* evil out there who can do this out of conscious non-disabled decisions. Pffft no.
  • I will continue to make assumptions of his mental state though I obviously don’t know shit about his mental state.
  • I will call you ‘insane’ and then sugar coat it by saying “AT LEAST YOU DIDN’T KILL ANYONE YET” in my quest for ‘rationalising’ something so vile. Again, I will SIMPLY NOT believe that people want to do *these* things out of purely non-disabled reasons and/or motives.

As the OP and Erik’s commentary says, there are PLENTY OF OTHER WORDS — really entertaining and biting ones too — that can be used to talk about Gaddafi. The ableism is absolutely unnecessary. This view is non-negotiable.

^ agree with jaded16india and thesadnessofpencils and fussyfangs.

plus you don’t even need real words to insult someone — if you can’t think of anything fitting that exists, just make something up like candycanefuckshitbathrobe or whatever.

(i know i’ve circulated some tweets and shit that call Gaddafi “insane” and some other such ableist bullshit — from now on i’m gonna try to find only the stuff that doesn’t have the ableist shit (and if i literally can not find anything relating to a particular story that doesn’t do that shit, i’ll put warnings).  sorry for fucking up.)

thesadnessofpencils:

You have a 1 in 1000 chance of being attacked by someone who does not have an invisible disability. You have a 1 in 20,000 chance of being physically assaulted by someone with an invisible disability.

When you use psychophobic language to refer to a neurotypical, or someone whose psychological status you are unaware of, this is ableist. You could disagree with them, they could be a horrible person, but if you are closing the case with ‘they have a mental illness’ your enthymeme is: they don’t see your logic (or lack thereof), so they must be crazy. Deviant. Self-evident! Score a point! Wash your hands of the matter for you don’t need to argue this point any more! Hurrah!

NO.

Why do you think ableist words work as slurs in the first place?

Some of the people you disagree with or who are shithead dictators could have invisible disabilities! But you wouldn’t know just by looking at them. & even then, why does this matter? Implying that every one of us out there who is actually crazy is liable to start shooting people with bullets the size of a human hand is an absurd assertion that will not stand either on empirical or normative grounds.

I reiterate: When you say an evil person is crazy, is insane, unhinged, any ableist word, you equate ‘goodness’ with neurotypicality (connotation versus denotation!), ignoring that many criminals are in fact perfectly ‘sane’ at the time of the crime, & many invisibly disabled people lead ‘functional’ lives without ever physically harming someone, but are still punished: do you have any idea how much internalised self-hatred & suffering is caused by these microaggressions

This is a dialogue we need to be having. You don’t get to derail with fauxpologies or Other us with of your offensive language & unquestioned attitudes.

{ The thing about slurs… }

nines19:

is that if you are not a member of the marginalized group that the slur..well…slurs, YOU CAN’T RECLAIM THAT SHIT.

If you are not a woman, YOU CAN’T RECLAIM “BITCH” OR “SLUT” OR OTHER WOMAN SLURS*.

If you are not a POC, YOU CAN’T RECLAIM “N~” OR OTHER POC SLURS*.

If you are not a trans woman, YOU CAN’T RECLAIM “T~” OR OTHER TRANS WOMAN SLURS*.

If you are not neuroatypical, YOU CAN’T RECLAIM “CRAZY” OR OTHER NEUROATYPICAL SLURS*.

Using slurs on yourself when you are not a member of the marginalized group they slur, even if you’re doing it in a “reclaimy” fashion, is not fucking okay. It propagates the system that allows these words to be used as slurs and appropriates the struggles of the marginalized groups that are slurred.

Don’t. Fucking. Do it.

* By “[marginalized group] slurs” I mean “slurs used against [marginalized group]”. Apologies if that’s unclear.

FUCKING YES.

Nines you are so amazing <3

But if you’re a POC, but aren’t black, you still can’t reclaim the n word. It isn’t a person-of-color-who-isn’t-black’s place to reclaim it because the word has never oppressed them.

Important commentary.

Thank you.

Don’t want to squash squee here but my two paise have to go sumwhere, no?

While we’re talking about ‘reclaiming slurs’, I’d like to say ’re-claiming’ anything and any word needs privilege. I can’t say I’m reclaiming ‘cunt’ if I’ve been demeaned by the same slur, at least it’s not so easy.

For example, were *I* to re-claim ‘cunt’, considering I’m a cis-gendered woman on whom this slur has been used , it would be a leetal weird. And here’s why: ‘cunt’ is specifically used on Indigenous or Dusty women to police our bodies and actions as being a ‘cunt’ is being ‘Western’ and we get Othered again. In such cases ‘re-claiming’ becomes next to impossible, because our cultures have no framework that will situate around it. We don’t always use ‘vagina’ to describe female genitalia, we have our culture specific terms. So then even this ‘re-claimed’ ‘cunt’ doesn’t fit everywhere.

Re-claiming words, spaces, ideas generally works if you have privilege and situated contexts to frame it in.

{ When people defend oppressive language }

itrhymeswithparade:

[NOTE: I did use this in a previous post, but I deleted it from that post, and it spurred a topic I felt deserved its own post. Um, carry on.]

For those of you that don’t know, people using oppressive language (especially when they are not part of that oppressed group) is one of my biggest piss offs/pet peeves.

Well, it’s one thing to USE oppressive language. It’s another to DEFEND it. And THAT is when you have crossed a line into extreme ignorance, in my view.

Some kid in my group therapy class at school was said some time ago that it was okay to say things like “that’s so gay”, because he felt that people didn’t identify as “gay” anymore (I don’t know from who or from where he got that, and he’s straight too, I don’t know why he thought he could decide what groups of people he didn’t belong to did or didn’t identify as).

I really wish I had said something, but quite frankly, it was so preposterous, and it was too early in the morning for an argument. But yeah, this has been on my mind lately. I know some people are going to call me ~too sensitive~ and tell me that they’re “just words”, but no, they aren’t just words. Words have a power over us and can hurt people more than any physical thing can. /rant

ok so apparently tumblr popularity (9 times outta 10 at least) goes like this:

  1. make un-creative racist gay-bashing (or otherwise bigoted) thing
  2. post
  3. GET HUNDREDS OF REBLOGS, ALMOST ALL OF THEM UNCRITICAL IF NOT ACTIVELY SUPPORTING YOUR SHOWBOATING BIGOTED ASS

seriously fuck you.  you think you’re “edgy” or something?  you think being a shitty person is cool?  fuck you and the gimmick you rode in on.

Fuck yea.  I was just discussing this on fb with some folks… NOT COOL.  You can’t “reclaim” a slur that isn’t yours to reclaim, even if you explain it away.  There are plenty of non-slur titles they could have replaced this with.

Seriously, you cannot reclaim a racial slur if it is not yours to reclaim. It is erasing and extremely privileged. Also, I think I was part of that fb discussion that you were referring to…

to all my followers: please do this if you can — if you cannot email these people, passing this around is still very helpful.

{ Conclusions: The word Derp (and variations) }

eateroftrees:

lizardwalk:

genderbitch:

While I can’t find much indication it was used before South Park, I am finding a shit ton of usages of it afterwards that are ableist as shit.

A lot of references to downs syndrome and other disabilities using visual attacks. Eyes pointing in different directions, etc.

This sort of usage has become commonplace and I would argue, makes the word weaponized no matter what its roots are.

Which means Derp is problematic.

So sorry all, I’ve been contributing to ableism by using it.

THIS, GODDAMNIT.
