Science has committed many a sin.
A better list of “sins” would be
- Scientific racism
- Scientific sexism
- the prior pathologization of non-heterosexual people
- the pathologization of trans* people
- the pathologization of asexual people
- the nonconsentual genital surgery performed on intersex people
- the persistent myth that fat bodies cannot be healthy bodies
and probably many more that I can’t think of off the top of my head right now.
The history of science shows that the sciences are far from being without appeal to popular prejudices.
That… beautiful… beautiful… commentary…
science didn’t create evolution…
Commentary made me swoon, also lol at the OP thinking that evolution was made by science and not discovered.
Reblogging because fuck yeah that’s some badass commentary. Awesometag.

{ whiny person is still whiny }
Fuck, the lengths these motherfuckers go to just to defend their bullshit (she breaks out some ableism and sexism too so read @ your own risk, god what a shithead).
It’s interesting to me how people will be like “I don’t give a shit” but they will not shut the fuck up and walk away like a person who actually doesn’t give a shit would.
I just needed the above on my blog. I find it disgusting the things we will forgive of professional athletes.
Michael Vick was shunned because of a dog fighting circle, and rightly so.
Roethlisberger raped two women and is embraced in spite of it.
Women < dogs. That’s what I’m getting from this.
And let’s also not pretend for a second that race has nothing to do with Vick’s being shunned even after serving his time, admitting his guilt, and openly apologizing and complying with the terms of his sentencing. That doesn’t make what he did okay, but at least he’s paid for his crimes. No one cares enough to bring a case against oh so wonderful white athlete dood.

{ The Shortest Horror Story Ever }
The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door.
-Frederic Brown
…it was a woman accompanied by a non-binary person.
it’s interesting* that there is even something bigoted and wrong with THE SHORTEST HORROR STORY EVER. it’s often hard to like that genre.
* here, “interesting” = shitty

[images: the female Shepard from Mass Effect. either 4 different versions or 4 photos of the same version with different hair. all are white and thin, with shoulder-length straight hair. hair colors (clockwise from top): blonde, black, red, brown.]
Battle of the hair colors.
I’m staying true to my kind!
Ginger all the way!
Dude, the ginger one almost looks like my Shepherd, just with a little longer hair! Is every other aspect of her appearance set in stone?
Meh. I’m not liking any of the 4, mainly because they are the cookie cutter standard video game woman, who looks like a Cover girl model more than an intergalactic soldier. She should be gritty, with scars and muscle. But of course, you can’t get that when it comes to female characters, because their purpose is to provide fanservice, not actually be canon…. And I’m not even going to start on the fact that the two non white looking characters aren’t even there…..
Honestly I’d never be happy with any default. I think they should do like Dragon Age 1 did and not put Shepard on the cover. I only got excited for a minute because one of them actually kind of looked like my Shep. But that would still be wrong to everyone who made a different Shep. And I think these are just the finalists, or rather the finalist, and now they’re just debating over hair color. It was left up to vote, and unfortunately, we live in the world we do and a WOC never really had a chance. I actually didn’t vote at all, because I don’t think the entire fandom should have to recognize one Shepard just because she won a poll.
Exactly. I remember reading on Borderhouse that they are going to be making a movie (you can totally tell where that’s going to go). One person suggested having a “many faces of Shephard” type of movie, where they have multiple Shephards with varying styles and looks, but keeping one or two things the same about the character (like a signifying scar and the suit). I thought it was an excellent idea.

{ Some day… }
Some day someone will explain to me why black women are expected to educate others on demand, but be silent or only speak in certain ways at all other times.
Some day someone will tell me why we must come correct (as defined by others, never by ourselves), or not come at all. But, no matter how others come at us we must be calm. We must be articulate. Most importantly, we must never ever be anything less than perfect in our response or everything we’ve ever said is invalidated in some eyes.
Some day, someone will tell me why black women are supposed to accept erasure, silencing, demonization, & assault as par for the course without anger or grief. We must be Strong in the face of all of these things at all times, or we are playing the race card, blaming white people for our problems, bitchy, or mean. We can never express pain in any ways that are not socially approved & never for too long. Because frailty, weakness, & emotional fulfillment are for other people. Real people.
Some day someone will explain why black women are never the experts on our experience. We are always in need of study, guidance, or critique. No matter how we are doing life, somehow we are doing it wrong. That’s why we can’t find love (except we do), or success (except we do), or happiness (except we do), without intervention.
Some day someone will explain why intervention is less about helping us & more abut crushing us. They will tell me why any ideas of complex personhood or agency are forbidden to us. Instead we must be a reflection, a helper, a stand in for others issues, with no room for our existence outside stereotypes like Mammy, Jezebel, or Sapphire.
Some day, someone will explain all of this to me. And on that day, when we tear things down, pull things apart, & rebuild black womanhood in our own image? Someone will be silenced. It will not be black women.

“Nobody objects to a woman being a good writer or sculptor or geneticist if at the same time she manages to be a good wife, a good mother, good-looking, good-tempered, well-dressed, well-groomed, and unaggressive.”

But let her ass be a brown, loud, aggressive, nappy headed single (or even uninterested in men *gasp) fat woman with credentials the size of Texas? Oh hell to the no. She got to go. She’s too much of a threat to the status quo.

“If working women earned the same as men (those who work the same number of hours; have the same education, age, and union status; and live in the same region of the country), their annual family incomes would rise by $4,000 and poverty rates would be cut in half.”

Just for all those people who keep trying to claim that paying women the same amount as equivalent men is an unimportant issue to society.
(via lucypaw)
aaaand again no one talks about race in this quote, despite the article. what working women vs what working men? because if we’re talking about white woman vs white man theres only like a .25 diff…but if youre talking about hispanic or native american women, white men literally make TWICE as much. every time people put these facts up with no acknowledgement of how much more white women make compared to everyone else, its fucking bullshit.
white feminism loves to campaign on salary equality talmbout “where are my .25” while conveniently forgetting that itd be much more stark of a figure if they measure WOC against white men. where is my motherfucking DOLLAR! wtf? but why point out how privileged you are, right? its only about equality for white women in the end.
(via soydulcedeleche)
Right? Plus I rarely see an explicit mention of the fact that the median income of white women is higher than that of either black or latino men. So…all that about how racism is settled but no one cares about sexism? Bullshit.
Finding the statistics for the first time of median income broken down by race, sex, and education, and seeing that white women outearn men of color, and yet never hearing that fact from white feminists, was my first wake-up call that white feminism really isn’t interested in me. Steinem & crew can keep their shit.

It’s also true that this does not account for the fact that we’re only talking about cis people. Trans people earn even less and have even higher rates of unemployment than their cis counterparts. This also is true for the disabled and so on.
