[URGENT: this is happening TODAY]
On December 16, call, email, and fax Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman and tell him to drop the charges against CeCe! Flood the lines and let Freeman know we won’t rest till CeCe is free from this racist, transphobic prosecution.
Chrishaun “CeCe” McDonald is a 23-year-old African American transgender woman who, after being violently attacked for her race and gender, is being unjustly charged with two counts of second-degree murder. Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman has the power to drop the charges against CeCe. So far, though, he has implicitly sided with CeCe’s white supremacist attackers by failing to acknowledge the racist, transphobic assault that she survived.
When: Friday, Dec 16, ALL DAY
Where: From home, work, wherever you find yourself!
What: Call Michael Freeman at 612-348-5540, fax at 612-348-2042, and email at citizeninfo@co.hennepin.mn.us
Call Marlene Senechal at 612-348-5561, fax at 612-348-3061, and email at citizeninfo@co.hennepin.mn.us
Remember to remain polite but assertive. Some key points to mention in your calls, emails, and faxes are:
* Identify yourself as a supporter, friend, family member, or community member calling about Ms. Chrishaun McDonald’s case.
* Tell the County Attorney’s Office why you’re concerned: Ms. McDonald was the target of a hate crime, but she was singled out for aggressive prosecution after the attack.
* County Attorney Freeman has declined to press charges in cases like this at least three times already this year, and he has the power to drop the charges against Ms. McDonald.
* Tell Freeman not to side with Ms. McDonald’s white supremacist attackers: drop the charges against Ms. McDonald.

Remember Mr. Peltier during the holiday season.
SEND CARDS AND LETTERS:
LEONARD PELTIER #89637-132
USP COLEMAN I
U.S. PENITENTIARY
P.O. BOX 1033
COLEMAN, FL 33521
Mr. Peltier should be placed in a unit with other older prisoners, but USP Coleman has Leonard listed as being 57 years of age when, in fact, he is 67 years old. All of Leonard’s prison records over these many years clearly indicate his correct date of birth. Write to the warden at USP Coleman to demand that he correct this “clerical error”.
Warden Jorge L. Pastrana

Overall, the conditions at USP Coleman are inhumane. The prisoners recently remained in lockdown for over 30 days. Peltier supporters, please write to demand that Leonard be moved to the medium security facility in Oxford, Wisconsin, in deference to his age, health, and current inability to maintain ties with family members and members of his Nation, the Turtle Moutain Band of Chippewa Indians.

the New York State Youth Leadership Council’s “Cases” page (link) lists his status as “Pending – more court dates to come”, so i assume we oughta keep this circulating.

Julio, a Bronx Community College student, faces an imminent deportation order after being detained in Greyhound bus. He is set to be deported back to El Salvador where he faces gang violence due to his sexual orientation.

{ LINK: Update on CeCe’s remand into custody | Support CeCe McDonald }
Hello community of CeCe supporters.
On January 4th, CeCe McDonald was told by her attorney that a bench warrant was issued for her, for two alleged violations of her conditions of release. Her PO alleges that she tampered with her electronic monitoring device for twelve hours; it was argued in court that this could have been a mechanical issue and that the state hasn’t provided evidence that CeCe was responsible. And though on previous occasions CeCe has passed the random drug tests she’s been required to take, she tested positive for THC on December 29th. On the afternoon of January 4th, CeCe turned herself in to the court and on January 5th, she appeared for a hearing on these allegations in a courtroom packed with supporters.
Judge Moreno heard arguments from both sides. The defense asked for the lowering of her bail so CeCe’s community could raise money for her release, and reminded the court that CeCe is not any more a threat to society than she was before the alleged violations. The defense also reminded the court that McDonald already has a job working at a local café and has been trusted to go to and from doctor’s appointments and work in the past, with no problems.
Judge Moreno ruled against CeCe, and set her bail at $500,000. Her trial is not scheduled to start until April 30, 2012.
Supporters will continue to spread the word about the injustice McDonald is suffering in the legal system, and to demand that Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman drop the charges against her.

“Neli: They were interrogating me, you know, they asked me if I had a gun, you know. They kept repeating themselves, “where is the gun?”
You know, I told them I don’t have a gun, and they tried and, you know, get me to say I had a gun, you know, changing the story, like, changing their words, like, “we didn’t say you had a gun, we said where is the gun?” Their saying maybe I just told the cross guard I had a gun but I really didn’t have it. I said, no, I didn’t say anything to the cross guard.
You know, I think the police officer made the whole thing up about me having a gun, I don’t think he even talked to the cross guard. I don’t even know. Just, you know- you know-
Off-screen: And- yeah. And by that point you were placed in isolation, in a jail- for how long?
Neli: I was in jail for 11 days.”

{ LINK: Give Basel His Day In Court! [email/phone call/fax campaign] }
the form that lets you email and fax the Governor and ICE is at the link. please do these things [edit: as soon as possible]/pass this around if you can. thank you.
Basel El-Bathy is a businessman employing approximately 10 people. He’s got a Masters in Business Administration. Basel has gone through the long legal process to get his Green Card. According to Governor Snyder, these are exactly the kind of immigrants that Michigan so desperately needs. According to the President, these are the immigrants that ICE should not be deporting.
Basel has a beautiful family formed by his wife, Rasha, and only child, Baadr. Unfortunately, Baadr was born prematurely and now has respiratory complications. The family depends Basel’s business for financial security.
Basel has served and helped so many people in the community. But now, Basel needs your help. Basel has been in ICE’s custody since May of 2011. ICE will be deporting Basel to Egypt any day, unless you take action.
ICE wants to deport Basel because he plead guilty to a minor infraction due to bad counsel from his attorney. Basel has not even been able to fight his case in court. ICE does not want to let him have his day in court to prove his innocence.
ICE needs to let Basel out so he can prove his innocence in court.
Take action and tell ICE to let Basel have his day in court. Call Khaalid Walls in Detroit (313) 226-0726 and John Morton in DC (202) 732-3000 and tell them:
“I am calling to ask that you please use discretion in deporting Basel El-Bathy (A# 087-084-976). He has not had the chance do defend himself in court on false charges. Please let Basel stay so he can have his day in court.”
ALSO
Take action by sending an email and fax to ICE and Governor Snyder asking for his help.
also, the email Alliance for Immigrant Rights are sending around about this has details about Basel El-Bathy’s case:
Basel El-Bathy is an Egyptian immigrant that went through the whole legal process to come to this country. He went to school and received a Masters in Business Administration and has opened up three businesses in Southeast Michigan. Basel has created jobs and fueled our economy as he built a life here in Michigan with his wife, and US Citizen son.
Last year, Basel was accused of not properly insuring some of the equipment at one of his gas stations. Basel maintains that he tried to pay, but that there were errors in the paperwork between the insurance company, the bank, and the state.
Basel wanted to fight the accusations in court to clear his name. However, his lawyer told him that this was such a minor problem, it would just be easier to plead guilty, pay the fine, and move on with his life.
What Basel’s lawyer didn’t tell him was that pleading guilty to the charges would place him in deportation. He’s now been in immigration detention since May pending deportation back to Egypt.
