[Trigger warning for youth in danger, familial abuse]

There are some very good reasons for people to “go missing.”

Particularly if they’re teenagers, which most of the “missing people” being reblogged on my dash are.

And I get that it’s instinctual to do everything you can to help. It feels like shit to know that you are quite possibly looking at the face of a kidnapping victim without any way to “make it better.” But if you’re wrong, if this person was escaping an abusive home, then I can’t ever overstate how much damage you personally are doing to them by reblogging a huge photo of their face and encouraging anyone who sees them to contact the authorities. 

You probably aren’t helping anyone, especially when you consider the fact that teenagers who don’t run away because they’re being abused very often return home after a couple days. And all things considered, privileging the understandable panic experienced by friends/family of runaways who are in comparatively little danger over the abused teenagers’ right to whatever self-determinism they can manage is fucking disgusting. 

And you do realize that anyone who is returned to an abusive home will probably experience exponentially higher risk of serious damage than they did before, yeah? ABUSERS ESCALATE when their victims try to escape. Why the fuck would you risk putting someone in that position?

If you want to “help,” please consider volunteering at homeless shelters or with youth programs/shelters if you are able. Otherwise, just don’t assume that you are a better judge of the situation faced by a teenager you have never fucking even met than they themselves are.

The “baby-stealing strangers in bushes” fear is deliberately engineered and not a reflection of reality. Only 8.6% of minors reported missing every year were even abducted at all—the rest left of their own accord. Of those abductions, 82% were perpetrated by family members, and most runaways who weren’t being abused at home return after a few days.

When this post was originally published, Hupsoonheng also pointed out another safety concern: if the person whose face you’re reblogging genuinely was kidnapped, then it’s a terrible idea to alert their kidnapper to fact that hundreds of thousands of citizens are on the lookout for them. Please think about this. It’s likely that a kidnapper/abductor would google their victim to gauge their risk. It’s likely that they will freak out when they find that post, and it’s likely that they will become even more vigilant if they think that there’s an increased risk of being caught.

There are things that you can do to help runaway (or potential runaway) teens. You can donate money to organizations that serve at-risk youth (I personally love Boston GLASS); you can volunteer at youth shelters; you can even just open up discourse about violence against youth in otherwise-ignorant spaces. If you want to help us, you have to ask us what we need and to make sure that your actions are ultimately in support of our interests, not your own prejudices.
