Teaching girls that their appearance is the first thing you notice tells them that looks are more important than anything. It sets them up for dieting at age 5 and foundation at age 11 and boob jobs at 17 and Botox at 23. As our cultural imperative for girls to be hot 24/7 has become the new normal, American women have become increasingly unhappy. What’s missing? A life of meaning, a life of ideas and reading books and being valued for our thoughts and accomplishments.

That’s why I force myself to talk to little girls as follows.

i sure cant identify w this. is this some more of this lady privilege i never experienced? is it coz i was really dark as a child? and possibly unnattractive?

coz i dont recall anyone oohhing and ahhing over my looks. i do recall very negative comments. and had i had anyone at all saying anything even remotely nice about my looks and not just how “smart and well behaved” i was, perhaps i’d have had a lot easier time keeping some fucking self esteem when all the negative shit came up?

so yeah, sorry. no one fucking fawned over me at all. and thats precisely what made me feel shitty about myself.

theres got to be BALANCE!

i would like to be a whole person too. one whos looks AND intellect are considered.

is this more of this white girl “dont flatter me so much and treat me like a princess, gawd” stuff?

coz i wish, brah. lol

we could say “the point is no one should comment on looks”, and ok. sure. but they still do and will and in the meantime? how do you save the little ones who ARENT gonna be showered w praise…only put downs? how do you deal when the whole world insists youre the ugliest kind of person there could be? not quite the same prollum, innit?

Thank you! Dark-skinned, kinky-haired, thick-lipped, wide-nosed, dark-eyed Black girls don’t get this treatment. We learn early on that we missed the beauty boat entirely and are reminded of that fact throughout our lives.

Truths. You can’t tell people to hold back something they never get. I was fortunate to have a family who fawned over my baby ass, but once I started walking and talking the outside world wasn’t happy or praising shit. A lot of us black women get treated older than we are and demanded of things and talked down to and stepped on and no one talks the time to treat us like we are special at all. 

For the longest the closest I got to praise was pretty for a black girl & I still might hear that one today. I tell my boys how cute they are, how smart they are, how much I love them, & whatever else I can think of to give them that basis for self-esteem that they’ll need to navigate life in the world. I don’t understand people who think you can’t compliment appearance & intelligence.

Every year my family and I do a toy drive for Toys for Tribes, which is for kids and teens back on the Cheyenne River Sioux(Lakota) reservation though Running Strong for American Indian Youth.

Each year, children at the Cheyenne River Youth Project^® write letters to Santa about what they want for Christmas. Running Strong and the Cheyenne River Youth Project^® try to get each child at least one gift from their list. For many Cheyenne River children, the Toys for Tribes toy drive is their only chance to get a gift for Christmas.
Please help us this year.

This is where my family is from, this directly benefits my cousins. If you have any extra money, please donate. If you don’t a signal boost would be incredibly appreciated.

You can donate directly through Running Strong, or you can go through my family and me. We’ve committed to 200 wish lists and we need your help in making sure that we’re able to fill these wishes- which include things ranging from toys to diapers to underwear to formula to warm winter jackets.

The unemployment back home tends to hover between 80-85% but can get as high as 90% during the winter (source). Even if you can only spare a few dollars, it’ll go a long way in helping. My sister is fundraising toys through her high school and I’m going to be focusing mainly on daily necessities once we fill all the items on the wish lists.

I’m going to try to do this. My mom told me that when she was little she was one of those little Children of the World, or some charity like that, kids. She said she always hated them because they gave her a broken doll.

Age at Time of Disappearance: 8 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 4’4” (132 cm); 59 lbs (27 kg)
Distinguishing Characteristics: Black female. Black hair; brown eyes. She has braided, shoulder length hair with twirls in the front. There are 10 to 12 small gold beads in the twirls.
Marks, Scars: She has a surgical scar along her waistline.
Clothing: She was wearing a bright, neon green, button-up shirt with the word “Braves” in red on the front; Levi blue jeans; and white K-Swiss tennis shoes.
AKA: She needs medication for her asthma.
Medical: Shy-Shy


Circumstances of Disappearance

Pate was last seen near her family’s residence on Crumpler Avenue near The Roxy Club in Unadilla, Georgia at approximately 7:00 p.m. on September 4, 1998. Her family planned to attend a football game that evening and her older sister noticed Pate was missing. The authorities were summoned after Pate’s family was unable to locate her later in the night. She has never been seen again.

Authorities have received numerous tips regarding Pate’s disappearance, but no solid evidence has been located to guide them to her whereabouts. Investigators explored the possibility that Quentin “Droopy” Kendrick, one of her family’s neighbors in 1998, may have been involved in her case. Kendrick was arrested in 2001 and charged with several counts of sexual assault. He resided approximately 300 yards from Pate’s home at the time she vanished. A search of his property did not yield any clues as to Pate’s whereabouts. Kendrick is not believed to have been involved in her disappearance. Authorities believe that Pate may have been abducted by someone she was familiar with at the time. Her case remains unsolved.
