Michigan Movie Business: Gov. Snyder FAIL!

WTF. I’m seriously livid right now. Gov Rick Snyder needs to get his shit together, open his eyes, and start using any brain he may or may not posses. The movie industry is providing an abundance of opportunity for people in Michigan. We have worked so hard to create and build up an industry for film in this state, and now it’s about to be destroyed. This NEEDS to be stopped. What about the millions we have invested into creating movie studios in Michigan, or are we really just investing in another vacant building? You think you’d use a budget cut on something that isn’t making as much money or creating jobs and opportunity for your state.

Studies on the film industry in Michigan (source)

The study shows that the production of movies and TV shows in Michigan during 2009 and 2010 generated 6,491 full-time equivalent jobs in the state and $812 million in economic output.

Production companies spent $532 million in the state in 2009 and 2010. Of that amount, nearly 60%, or $310.5 million, impacted Michigan’s economy.

• Eighty percent of the 4,656 indirect jobs that the movie business has created in Michigan have occurred in five industries: food services, business services, rentals and repairs, personal services and retail.

• The net cost of the tax credits awarded during 2009 and 2010 totaled $137 million. Taxes and fees generated from movie activity, plus reduced unemployment benefits because the filming creates jobs, offset the state’s costs, the study says. According to the Michigan Film Office, the state has awarded $304 million in film tax credits since April 2008 and has paid out $96 million so far.

• Film productions paid Michigan residents $42.8 million in wages and salaries in 2009 and $66.9 million in 2010. That equates to an average annual salary of about $53,700 per full-time equivalent employee.

• The average film production in Michigan lasted 90 days in 2009 and 89 days in 2010.

This is just so ridiculous. I will do anything I can to make sure this doesn’t pass.

FREAKING AWESOME. That makes me the happiest I’ve been in a LONG TIME.
FUCK YEAH!
(p.s. for those who don’t know—Michigan govenor is trying to limit the amount of tax breaks michigan will give to the film industry in Michigan. The film industry that is only just settling itself in Michigan but quickly becoming a central industry especially in South East Michigan and the Detroit area in particular. It’s providing an amazing economic opportunity for an area that is desperate to get off its dependence on the auto industry. And elminating the tax breaks that encouraged the industry to settle here to *begin* with— a major production just picked up and left town. that a republican govenor is fucking with the one fucking industry in the entire state that has serious growth potential that is not based on manufacturing when Repubs are usually all GIVE CORPORATIONS ANYTHING THEY ASK FOR PLUS OUR ASSHOLES TOO!!!!!—doesn’t make ANY sense to me…Annnnnnway—that’s what this town hall meeting was about—protesting the cap on tax breaks—and LOOK AT HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE THERE!!!!!!!!!!)

Danny Glover’s Haiti film lacked ‘white heroes’, producers said

rosaflora:

US actor Danny Glover, who plans an epic next year on Haitian independence hero Toussaint-Louverture, said he slaved to raise funds for the movie because financiers complained there were no white heroes.

“Producers said ‘It’s a nice project, a great project… where are the white heroes?’” he told the press during a stay in Paris this month for a seminar on film.

“I couldn’t get the money here, I couldn’t get the money in Britain. I went to everybody. You wouldn’t believe the number of producers based in Europe, and in the States, that I went to,” he said.

D”The first question you get, is ‘Is it a black film?’ All of them agree, it’s not going to do good in Europe, it’s not going to do good in Japan.

“Somebody has to prove that to be a lie!”, he said. “Maybe I’ll have the chance to prove it.”

“Toussaint,” Glover’s first project as film director, is about Francois Dominique Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803), a former slave and one of the fathers of Haiti’s independence from France in 1804, making it the first black nation to throw off imperial rule and become a republic.

The uprising he led was bloodily put down in 1802 by 20,000 soldiers dispatched to the Caribbean by Napoleon Bonaparte, who then re-established slavery after its ban by the leaders of the French Revolution.

Due to be shot in Venezuela early next year, the film will star Don Cheadle, Mos Def, Wesley Snipes and Angela Bassett.

How the fuck can a film about the Haitian Revolution/Fight for Independence/Black Slave Revolt have “white heroes”??

People just make me sick sometimes.

Gon’ Danny Glover, make that film. I promise to go see it.

I’m going to see it 5 times.  There has to be a place where we can donate money to the production of this movie.  People need to put the word out.  THATS WAY TOO MUCH TALENT IN ONE FILM TO PASS UP.  Fuck Hollywood, and Fuck white heroes.  This is a REAL BLACK FILM.

They’re looking for white heroes in a historical film about Haitian Independence!?!

WTF?!

They are always looking for white saviors - especially in stories that concern POC. It’s never really about us and as he said, if there aren’t any good white people in it, white people won’t go out to see it cause they’ll assume that it’s a ‘black movie’ made solely for black people. That and the fact that they don’t want to be filled with white guilt.

I’m tired of Hollywood’s blackout system. This is the same mess Spike Lee had to go through to the film, Malcolm X , made. That story wouldn’t even make any damn sense if there was to be a white savior for that film. WTF? So, I guess instead of Toussaint Louverture defeating Napolean, Napolean emancipated Haiti. I wouldn’t go see that shit.

Warner Bros has finally glommed onto a lead actor for its adaptation of the Japanese science fiction novel All You Need is Kill.

Set in a post apocalyptic future, All You Need is Kill is about a young Japanese soldier, Keiji Kiriya, who serves on an international fighting force fighting an alien invasion. Keiji gets stuck in a “Groundhog’s Day” scenario where he keeps reliving the day he died.

Set to play the main character in the film adaptation? On December 1st, 2011, Variety reported: Tom Cruise.

Is Warner Bros on a racebending roll?

Throughout November, Warner Bros kicked around names for its adaptation of another property with Japanese origins: Akira.

After considering Brad Pitt and Keanu Reeves, WB nabbed Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy) for Kaneda, continues to evaluate a shortlist of unknown Caucasian actors for Tetsuo, and has offered Kristen Stewart (Twilight) the role of Kaneda’s love interest.

Gary Oldman and Helena Bonaham Carter were also propositioned for supporting roles. After Gary Oldman turned down his offer to play the antagonist in the adapted story, the Colonel, Japanese stage actor Ken Watanabe was reportedly offered the role. A casting call has also gone out for a “Japanese American” for the role of Yamagata, a side character from the manga.

Warner Bros is also jump starting an adaptation of the Japanese anime Death Note.

One of these films will have an Asian American lead, right? Or at least an actor of color in the lead role?

The situation in Hollywood is a terrible one, and the big problem is that Black actors and actresses just don’t have the money sources to turn to, it seems. Very few Black writers are being allowed to write about the full circle of Black life, and I suppose that’s because no money is being offered to make Black films that tell the story in the ways that I think they should be told. I’ve been trying for quite a long time to find a property that I’d like to do and that would allow me to be an actress. - Tamara Dobson
