This is Carolina Maria De Jesus. She is responsible for writing one of the greatest primary sources of Brazilian and Latin American History, Child of the Dark: The Diary of Carolina Maria De Jesus. Child of the Dark is the edited version of Maria’s personal journals, which were written on scraps of paper that she collected as a trash picker. The book focuses on her struggle to survive as a mother of three in a São Paulo favela. Her book is one of the only first-hand accounts of favela life in existence. READ IT
