Does this image piss anyone else off?

It pisses me off, in that none of the alleged “equalities” at the top of the stairs actually exist in the US yet.

{ Everyone, I’m really not that informed on pop culture. }

tranzient:

Like, at all.

I mean, I have my opinions and my opinions are the reason I don’t pay attention.
I don’t like reading things that make me uncomfortable, and to be honest, a lot of these celebrities make me uncomfortable.

Like the Sarah Silverman thing. Has everyone forgotten that she dressed up in black face while making a racist joke?

Or Amanda Palmers ‘ironic’ view of the KKK and the fake rape scene on stage, which Margaret Cho was a part of.

Then all the stuff I’ve been saying about Ke$ha, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Why are we ignoring these things?

They aren’t great allies. We should not allow people in this world to be shoved under the bus while they’re making money through our expense.

Wow. Lost a lot of respect for Margaret Cho. And yeah, I’m done with everyone else listed.

Margaret Cho, noooooooooooooooo!  Why!

{ Honestly, that’s why I fight so hard about words and stuff. }

genderbitch:

Most of the time it doesn’t offend me. I don’t take a lot of things personally. Conflict freaks me out more than words offend me, so if it was about offense, I’d never talk about words cuz everyone seems to wanna fight me on it.

No, words have a real and serious effect on how we think and how we think has a real and serious effect on how we act. I have literally watched the flow of ideas from slurs and dehumanizing language into mindsets that are harmful (in former friends) who then started directly treating me badly or even getting threatening towards me cuz of being trans and a woman. I’ve watched people who claim they’re fine with poor people say and hear constantly the words and slurs and dehumanizing language about the homeless and I’ve watched their mindset evolve into one of classist hatred, that looks down on me for being homeless or finds ways to separate me from “the bad homeless people” in order to keep that hatred directed at faceless victims.

Knowing how easily the words people use can turn them into weapons of dominance, oppression, rape, violence and murder, having experienced it myself, you should realize that the reason I fight so hard on words and slurs is not cuz of offense.

It’s out of fear. Because when your words translate into mindsets and then translate into actions, it will be I and others who pay the price.

Often in blood.

*trigger warning* for people being disgusting asshats when talking about the Egyptian protests, rape, and religion

allthebloodinmyveins:

1. Egypt just needs to get its head together and embrace anarchy, man.

2. Rape only happens amongst the religious and if you disagree with me, then you’re sticking your head in the sand.

3. Let me tell you how the protests SHOULDA gone down, they woulda too if I and my enlightened brethren were there to direct them.

4.Oppression only exists where there’s religion, duh.

{ On criticism of religion and followers }

thejuthikakid:

People are allowed to criticize religion and they will do so as much as they want to.

People are allowed to criticize extremists and they will do so as much as they want to.

Do not say hateful things which exploit a minority in your criticism. Do not group all people together in your criticism.

In turn, religious followers are asked to please keep their comments about a person’s personal beliefs to themselves and to criticize the idea back.

This is probably a very polite post to the holy shit you’re a bitch messages I’m getting.

British climber Adam Potter fell 1,000 feet down the side of a mountain in the Scottish Highlands. A helicopter crew found him half an hour later, standing on his feet reading a map. How did he survive?
Potter was climbing a mountain called Sgurr Choinnich Mor with his girlfriend, two friends, and his dog when he slipped on the snow and rolled down a “rough scree slope,” over three hundred-foot-high cliffs, and finally onto a boulder, which he thinks may have knocked him out.
Hardcore Scotland.

A brief side note.
Adam Potter lives in Glasgow, he’s a proud Scotsman. He’s also - I think it’s fair to say - an unkillable bad ass, no? Yet read the first word again. They describe him as a British climber. This is, technically, correct. Scotland is a part of Great Britain, which in turn makes him a British resident.
But here’s the rub. Had he actually pushed someone off a cliff, then he’d have been labelled as Scottish, instantly and indelably. No British person has ever murdered anyone, or lost a sporting match, or made a movie which flopped or done anything bad, ever. English people have, Welsh people have, Scottish people have, but never a British person. British people can be victims of a terrorist attack, but never the terrorist. If I were to foil a bank robbery, I’d be described as a London resident, but if I were the one robbing the bank, I’d be described as Irish.
This is a problem I have with the way conversations about Race and Ethnicity play out on Tumblr, they’re almost always based on the way North Americans percieve it. White Privilege doesn’t work the same way over here as it does elsewhere. It still exists, obviously, but we have our own version of shading over here, which isn’t taken into account in traditional views.

There are always methods to demarcate ethnocultural differences. That is to say, more clearly, that there’s foreign and then there is really foreign.
Perhaps there is race and then there is ethnicity. You get shit for being Irish here, but you might be ~honoured~ as a London resident as you said. You’re not That Type of Irish Person, you’re assimilated successfully in London. And either way, you’re still white, so you still have that going for you — until you open your mouth, as you’ve mentioned before. Always a “gotcha!” game of Are You Other Enough?
With my accent and habits, I could be considered English — and I have consciously taken to describing myself as English so that I and others are aware of my particular position so I don’t just homogenise the whole of the British Isles with my talk. I’ve also found that “English” is also the word used by the Daily Mail readers as another way of saying “Proud to be White And the Best Type of White Thank You Very Much”. Furthermore, person of colour describing oneself as British sometimes has overtones of [British] Empire to it, even though my country of ethnic origin was never subject to that. I was born in England and have lived here all my life, have witnessed attitudes towards Irish, Scottish and Welsh people, looked at and performed the constructed English image - stiff upper lip, queues, crumpets, weather, especial humility… so am I English? Do I have English privilege but not white privilege? Is Englishness ethnicity or nationality for me, or indeed for anyone…?
English privilege is weird to describe and make distinct BUT i have (albeit rarely) seen discussions of Statesider privilege conferred to those in the USA, soooo I think it makes sense to mark out these differences as such things obviously don’t take place in a void. And I don’t think there’s a zero sum game here of privilege trumping.
I think there was another post along the same lines as this. The person who wrote it is an Irish Traveller. They outlined how they were marked as Other in Ireland but elsewhere would pass as white, and so was simultaneously privileged yet not in terms of race (white) and ethnicity (Irish Traveller). I have a feeling that this particular issue is just a whole other bunch of things to consider in and of itself though, which shows just how important it is to localise discussion sometimes and be as specific as you can.

{ where is the good, non-ismy tv snark? }

i was talking with [someone i know who wishes to remain nameless], about someone on Television Without Pity doing a serious cissexism fail, and she asked me where she could find good tv snark that was less ism-y.  i said i didn’t know… BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW.

so i was wondering if any of YOU know: where is the good tv snarky-recap-type stuff that is not grossly ism-y?

“When people go out of their way to ignore their privilege i get angry because those people are CONFIRMING THEIR PRIVILEGE; it’s like throwing a temper tantrum to prove you’re mature, but then ignoring that the tantrum you’re throwing is the exact reason why your mom won’t let you have cookies from the cookie jar, and why she thinks you’re acting immaturely.”
