On Dec 28th, this lovely teenager, whose birthday was yesterday went missing from Baltimore. Originally from North Carolina, visiting her sister in Maryland, she was last heard from via facebook the Tuesday after Christmas….Now 2 weeks later and there still no media attention for this girl. I mean yesterday they talked about the damn snow storm for hours and not once was she mentioned. Sad. Maybe it’s the recent shootings, the birds and the fish mass death, her being black, her family not being rich, I don’t know…all I know when Elizabeth Smart went missing EVERYONE and they mama knew her name…Regardless of the whys and the why not Phylicia Barnes is not on every news outlet doesn’t even matter…she is still missing.

I hope, like Elizabeth Smart, she is alive and returns in less than 9 months to her family….

Special Facts: Phylicia has a tattoo of a rose on her lower right leg.  She was last seen wearing a navy blue hooded pea coat, a turquoise thermal shirt, blue jeans and white slippers/boots. She was carrying a caramel-colored purse.

Please, if you find it in your heart to donate go to their website and contribute what you can. Even $5 or $10 does make a difference.

If I might add: ethnocentric shelters are intrinsic and invaluable in any city which has first or second generation immigrant populations.  We have a similar shelter in San Francisco for Russian and Ethiopian Jewish immigrants who are afraid to go to outsiders for various cultural, linguistic and religious reasons. The above-mentioned Muslim women’s shelter is an extremely worthwhile charity which no-doubt fills a very specific need.

And if this video wasn’t heart-wrenchingly awful enough, the comments being made on the original website display the utter ignorance of some people, with talk of n*****s and “monkeys fresh from African jungles”. I mean, are you serious?

Evil knows no colour. This video should not be about the colour of these attackers’ skin - and subsequently cause people to generalise and stereotype about every other African American/Black person on the planet. It should be about the content of their character and their individual actions which were so very clearly wrong.

This video, along with its’ comments from American people has made me sick to my stomach. 

I sincerely hope, that the perpetrators were brought to justice and that the victim in this situation has managed to regain their dignity. Yet sadly, I know the right thing doesn’t always happen.

there have been some racially gross comments about this on tumblr, also.  also victim-blaming, blatant trolling, and a lot of cis people saying shit like “i don’t care about gender” or “i don’t care if the victim was a guy or a girl”.  um, eew.
