{ LINK: Hacked data reveals US Marines contract killers, hunting migrants on the border }

nezua:

The hunting and murder of migrants by US Marines along the Arizona border was among the first facts revealed, after LulzSec hacked the Arizona Department of Public Safety on Thursday.

Describing the hacked data, Boingboing.net, said, “There are countless mundane documents covering hours worked, officers’ personal information and other stuff of minimal journalistic interest. But the bulletins often offer fascinating stories of law enforcement encounters, such as this one with off-duty Marines patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border with assault weapons.”

The data describes heavily-armed US Marines, working on contract, to hunt migrants:

“In other incidents reported in October, U.S. Border Patrol agents encountered two subjects who claimed to be members of the Border Watch Group the Blue Lights based on the Caballo Loco Ranch. The subjects, armed with pistols and at least one M4 rifle, were dressed in full desert camouflage uniforms, similar to those of the United States military. They stated they were not members of the Minutemen, but paid contract employees who ‘get the job done’ and ‘were not just volunteers.’ They possessed valid United States Marine Corps identification cards.”

As it released this data, Lulz Security said in a statement, “We are targeting AZDPS specifically because we are against SB1070 and the racial profiling anti-immigrant police state that is Arizona.”

Another Insensitive Blow to Carlos Lamadrid’s Family

Tucson – Nearly four months after the shooting death of Carlos Lamadrid by a Border Patrol Agent in Douglas, Arizona, his family has been ordered to remove a cross placed at the site of the murder.  Guadalupe Guerrero, mother of the 19 year-old, received the letter on July 14th, nearly four months after Carlos, a U.S. citizen, was shot in the back by a Border Patrol Agent.

Carlos Lamadrid, a US citizen, was shot in the back by Border Patrol.

The cross and other memorial items were placed at the site of the shooting within a week of the shooting.  Although dated June 29th, the letter was not delivered to his mother until today.  The letter states:  “The Border Patrol does not allow anything to be placed on or adjacent to the border fence because such placement negatively impacts operations and creates and unnecessary risk to our agents.”

The letter also states that the family has a period of five calendar days from the receipt of the letter to remove the cross and memorial items.  “If all items are not removed from the current site after that date, they will be removed and returned to you” the letter goes on to state.

On April 5th, Derechos Humanos and other community organizations joined the family in denouncing the murder of Carlos and demanding that the shooting be impartially investigated and prosecuted.

The Department of Homeland Security’s callous demand for the removal of his memorial demonstrates its intent to disappear this totally unnecessary death and the violence that reigns on the border. To date, Border Patrol has failed to provide answers to the family yet is attempting to erase history and remove any reminder of the human cost of their brutal policies.

Derechos Humanos calls on friends and allies to contact the office of Congressional Reps. Gabrielle Giffords and Raúl Grijalva and the U.S. Border Patrol to allow the family’s memorial to remain, and to continue to demand answers that have been denied both the family and our community in regards to the murder of Carlos Lamadrid.

The family of Carlos Lamadrid and Derechos Humanos invite you to join us this Sunday, July 17th at 5:00pm at the memorial site in Douglas, Arizona for a vigil to honor the life of Carlos, continue our call for justice in his murder, and demand that his memorial be permitted to remain at the site where his life was so tragically taken from him.

please do this and/or pass this around if you can.  thanks.

The Arizona legislature has passed legislation that will now allow prisons to charge $25 for people to visit their family and friends in prison. It is a remarkably cruel law since many of these visitors are coming from low income families and have to travel great distances. Yet, legislators are pointing out that they originally wanted to charge babies and children as well but decided to be nice guys.

The fee is being justified as a one-time “background check fee” for visitors, but staffers admit that it is an effort to increase revenue at the expense of these families. Wendy Baldo, chief of staff for the Arizona Senate, confirmed that they “were trying to cut the budget and think of ways that could help get some services for the Department of Corrections.”

Prison visitation has an extremely positive impact on inmates both psychologically and socially. It maintains and strengthens family bonds that will be needed to keep them from recidivism and can weaken the hold of gangs and other bad influences. Now the state is going to tell tell families on assistance that in order to see their loved ones, each adult will have to fork over $25. The article below also details how people have had difficulty paying the fee in advance. Visiting a loved one can be a terribly traumatic experience for a family. Yet, Arizona will now be there to get its cut.

As someone who has worked in prisons for decades, I find this absolutely appalling. From the beginning of correctional systems, the one right that virtually all societies have afforded inmates has been visitation. To now charge for the right to visit is gratuitous and cruel.

No gif can express my distaste.

WHOA

WTF is going on with Arizona?

this is just reprehensible. appalling. a human fucking rights disaster. abusive. I just…the level of violence of this country knows no fucking bounds.

^ all of this.

from the nyt article:

Shauna, whose brother is at the Eyman complex, said she learned about the fee after she filed applications for her brother’s son, a Mormon missionary in Kentucky who wanted to visit his father, along with a friend and two other relatives.

She was told that the best way to pay the fee was electronically, through Western Union, but was unable to get the system to work, she said.

She was then advised to send a money order. Despite confirmation by United Parcel Service that the package had been delivered, the Corrections Department told her that the $100 payment — four $25 money orders for four visitors — had not been received, she said.

Another $100 payment was sent, and on Friday — months after she began the application process — she finally got confirmation of the payment from the department.

“I have now spent $200 of my own money to get family in,” she said, adding that it could take up to 60 days for the department to approve the applications.

With feeling.

Please do not look at Arizona thinking that the question is about why is Arizona so bad .

The answer is simple : they can.

Let’s question why they can?

I’m on my phone so I can’t link , but champagnecandy has a link from CNN

that encapsulates what WOC and activists and more recently BFP has said very deeply and truly

It’s about in this case literally access and its COMFORTABLE

to point at that or this racism but it’s not factual

We have a country that allows this to bear and that is something much more complex and much more real

{ LINK: Undocumented youth in Arizona are ready to face off against Sheriff Joe Arpaio and you are invited to watch the action live on UStream | Dream Actvist }

from the email they’re sending out about this [please tune in & pass this around if you can]:

For years now Sheriff Joe Arpaio has had full permission to do as he wishes with the undocumented community here in Arizona. And he has been pretty good at doing just that. Twice a month he conducts his version of raids, going into businesses and charging working families with felonies for attempting to put food on the table. He has put a lot of fear in the the community and now it is time for us to fight back.

Today, Rocio (17), Jackie (16), Viridiana (20), Daniela (20), Hugo (23) and Stephanie (18), will be coming out as undocumented and unafraid to demand an end to Arpaio’s career and they want you to watch it.

We’ll be going live at 3:00pm PST / 6pm EST. Be sure to tune in and join the fight against Arpaio’s out there who think they will forever hold our communities down. We need to fight back. We need to show them that, despite the fear, we are ready to confront them and take ownership of they same thing they think they can use against us, our fear.

Maybe you are not ready to fight back but you should definitely support those who are.

The youth coming out, if arrested, would be handed over to Sheriff Arpaio. At his jail they could be placed into deportation proceedings, but it is a risk they are willing to take. Will you support them?

Much love,

Mohammad
