WARNINGS: talk of racism/racist violence; whitesplaining tone argument & privilege-denying; EDIT: and ableist appropriation of term “color blind”
The Smile of Hope
This is a picture of a little 13-year-old girl arrested during the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protest on the Brooklyn Bridge.
The picture tells us something very important, with brutal clarity. When the police are out on the streets arresting 13-year-old kids for peacefully protesting political issues then we know beyond argument something is terminally rotten in America.
When Black woman cops are arresting little white girls and not obviously inflicting any physical harm upon them THAT is when we know “beyond argument something is terminally rotten in America.” Yup. “Brutal clarity” happens when a quirky little white girl smiles bravely at the camera. Not when shit like this happens to little Black girls. No, no.
It tells us that there is hope too, though. The spark of freedom that flickered in the middle-east during the Arab Spring is being re-ignited all over in America. People are waking up from the long, bad dream. They are seeing the lies and exploitation and hypocrisy all around them and saying ‘Enough’.
The battles to be fought are formidable, the forces ranged against us are frightening, but now at least we have hope that a better America, and a better world, is possible.
Oh, yes. America is waking up now that shit is starting to hit the fan for white people. Nobody woke up when Aiyana Stanley Jones was murdered for a tv show. Nobody woke up when Detroit was suffering. White people came and cheered on the economic destruction. Still do. They have “urban decay” photoshoots where they take pics of the sad, tragic, yet “beautiful” crumbling buildings. Completely ignore the people who haven’t been able to find jobs or access a decent grocery store w/in city limits in fucking decades.
No, when a white-skinned girl in a goofy hat smiles at the camera while being arrested, THAT is when America wakes up. THAT is a sign of hope. Not the people who BEEN marching and protesting and boycotting. Nawl. This watery-eyed lil girl is our “hope.”
Had to reblog this strong opinion.
Let’s back up a second here. When did everyone become so bitter? And also, when did this become an issue of race? Because there is a black police officer in the picture? Its incredible the racism that exists on BOTH sides, and that the economy is color blind. It has been BAD FOR EVERYONE, I don’t appreciate it when people say that “Now we’re paying attention because the shit hit the fan for white people.” What’s that supposed to mean? That because I’m white I’ve been immune from financial difficulties up until now, and that even now, I’m not hurting as much as every black, hispanic or asian person in the USA? My WHITE MOTHER was on welfare for 2 years because my abusive father left her with me and my sick brother. We had to live in the worst part of philadelphia while she attended NIGHT SCHOOL so she could work and pay for us just to have shelter and food. And now, as a 20 year old WHITE citizen I live paycheck to paycheck with 30k in student debt for a school i didn’t even graduate from. I have bill collectors calling me already about over due accounts on medical bills for a suicide attempt and forced hospitalization in a facility not of my choosing that was not covered under my insurance. Insurance I almost LOST if it weren’t for the healthcare bill recently passed. So how about we stop bitching about color issues and see that EVERYONE IS HURTING. EVERYONE. And the protests in New York are not about color or race or creed or whatever, it’s about people and how people have mismanaged the wealth in this nation regardless of the color of their skin. So how about we stop doing this race bullshit and treat everyone as equals.
It’s a “race issue” because people like you see nothing wrong with saying shit like this: “We had to live in the worst part of philadelphia.”
What made it the worst part of Philidelphia, hm? How come the problem with that part of the city is that you had to live there? And not the poverty “that part” of Philly had to deal with for decades before you “had to” live there? What about the people there? Why aren’t you indignant about their suffering? No, you’re just mad you had to live with them. And that tells me all I need to know.
PS: “I don’t appreciate it when people say that ‘Now we’re paying attention because the shit hit the fan for white people.’ What’s that supposed to mean? […] that even now, I’m not hurting as much as every black, hispanic or asian person in the USA?” I believe that’s your guilty conscience speaking.
Ok so let’s have a little lesson in economics and crime rates in cities. What made it the worst place in Philadelphia was the CRIME, and for the most part, the highest amount of crime in a city happens in the lower income sectors, the two are very seldom exclusive of each other. And guess what, there were all kinds of people living in poverty there. POVERTY IS COLOR BLIND, it does not inherently affect one race more than another strictly due to the color of their skin. I’ve lived next to Camden NJ ever since I moved out of that neighborhood, which is UNFORTUNATELY riddled with poverty and crime, which is not the fault of the people living there, it is the fault of the corrupted government not serving it’s people to the fullest.
How dare you imply that I think I’m better than the people that lived in the same neighborhood as me. I was an infant, just a little girl. I remember hearing gun shots from my bed room window and our house was broken into twice. I was not better than my neighbors, I am not better and I never will be. They are people all the same, and for you to think that I have such ignorant views of the world around me is slander, since you know pretty much nothing about me. I live in a diverse neighborhood in New Brunswick, and cherish the culture that exists because of the locals. My boyfriend helped create a program to help the illegal immigrants in the area get the proper medical services and food for their children. I have a large diverse group of friends who come from various different economic and social backgrounds and I respect and love them all the same. How dare you assume that because I simply stated that I’m tired of the hate that goes on on both sides, that I’m suddenly an racist elitist. I’m not going to sit and argue that there isn’t social injustice in the United States, but it’s good to know that it isn’t just happening to peoples of a certain race or ethnic background. It’s happening to everyone. And what an ignorant point of view it is to have that suddenly people care because it’s the “white” people who are suffering now, when EVERYONE is suffering now.
And also, what guilty conscience of mine is speaking now? Because I don’t believe I’m hurting financially any more or less than any other person in the United States? That I’m not hurting more or less than another student buried in student loans or a family trying to pay back a mortgage? I worked hard throughout high school to graduate with a fucking 3.8 GPA, 11th in my class. I worked part time jobs since I was legally able to at the age of 16, and yet for all my hard work, I’m 30k in debt, for a school I dropped out of and another 30k for the schooling I’m currently enrolled in. And there are millions of people who worked just as hard or probably even HARDER that are in my place or worse. I pay my own fucking rent, bills, food, school, EVERYTHING. I’m 20 years old and have had to work for EVERYTHING I have in my life right now, and I would gladly give the US government my hard earned money if it helped people, ALL PEOPLE.
It’s people like you who spread hate in the world; you think you’re doing everyone a favor by pointing out flaws in peoples arguments, telling them they don’t care about the world they live in simply because they hold an opinion. So how about instead of posting hateful remarks which you know no doubt will be responded to, go volunteer in a soup kitchen, write letters and make phone calls to your senators and representatives asking them to stop cuts on social programs, donate money to organizations for the homeless and disenfranchised, and stop thinking that chewing me up and spitting me out (which failed horribly BTW) is really going to change the bad things happening in the world.
MAJOR whitesplaining tone-argument in your first reblog.
and privilege-denying SEEMS TO BE THE WHOLE POINT OF YOUR REBLOGS HERE.
"My boyfriend helped create a program to help the illegal immigrants in the area get the proper medical services and food for their children." THIS REEKS OF WHITE SAVIOR NARRATIVE CRAP.
"the hate that goes on on both sides" DON’T ACT LIKE "RACISM AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE" EXISTS, ASSHAT.
QUIT ACTING LIKE YOU’RE BEING “ATTACKED” FOR WHAT YOU SAID, GOOD GRIEF — YOU’RE BEING WHITE SUPREMACIST, STOP STOP STOP, ugh.
the term “color blind” the way you use is is ableist appropriation and associates a disability with willful racial ignorance.
and that last paragraph, OH MY GOD, YOU ARE SUCH A GUILT-TRIPPING DISHONEST WILLFULLY-IGNORANT WHITE SUPREMACIST CREEP. get over yourself.
