Local publications are reporting a stay of execution.

Creative Loafing link

There is a rally in Woodruff Park at 5pm. The vigil has been cancelled. (This information from the disABILITY LINK facebook.)

[WARNING for Creative Loafing article: talk of execution, racist/ableist prison industrial complex, r-word]

from the article, about the stay: “We’ve confirmed with attorney Brian Kammer that Hill’s stay of execution is temporary and will be revisited during a hearing on lethal injection drugs, which will take place at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning. The state won’t appeal that decision before that time.”

i’m extremely low on mental processing power at this point, i basically can not think anymore so me doing anything regarding that article and/or the stuff mentioned/linked to in it will be very slow or maybe impossible [even reading and parsing all of it].  i am very sorry for this and sorry it took me so long to post this.

@mellopetitone: thanks for the update.  sorry if i’m being disgusting in any way.

{ Free Marissa Alexander }

another Petition supporting her:

In August 2010, Marissa Alexander defended herself from further violence by her abusive estranged husband in their home by firing a warning shot toward the ceiling. No one was injured by the shot fired to save her life. Without bond to care for her premature nursing daughter, in May 2012, Marissa was wrongly convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Under Florida’s mandatory minimum sentencing law, Marissa was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison. Marissa had a restraining order against the serial abuser, a legally licensed gun and permit, and no criminal history. Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law did not work for her in the way it worked for Trayvon Martin’s killer which raises serious concerns of discrimination against Marissa. It appears that stereotypes about Black women project them as aggressors even when defending their lives upon deadly attack. Something has to be done regarding all women who defend themselves against their abusers. Too often they receive little understanding and sympathy from the systems charged with demonstrating justice.

{ From CeCe, with love: Leslie Feinberg, Kristin Beck, and Jenni Gann [includes info on how to help Jenni Gann out — she is a prison inmate suffering transmisogynist sexual harassment by prison staff] }

numol:

Before I start this post, I just want to send all of my love and positive energy to my dearest friend and idol Leslie Feinberg. I just want you to know that it is an honor to know and have met you. You are truly an inspiration and a true example of resiliency, honesty, intelligence, strength—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—love, and empathy. It’s a blessing to know that you have inspired so many including me, and that your legacy for the LGBTQI-GNC community is without vain—and even more a blessing to know that I am fighting alongside you, a legendary author and activist, in this war against injustice and inequality. To Leslie and Minnie Bruce, I am your child. And I love y’all so much, and for all that y’all have done for me. My sincerest love and support for you both. Hugs and kisses.

*          *          *

In light of Independence Day I want to commend my newest idol and inspiratory, U.S. Navy Seal vet Kristin Beck. And I can say that I am not a fan of the military-industrial complex (M.I.C.), but after watching Anderson Cooper’s exclusive interview with the woman who told her troubles as the clichéd “woman stuck in a man’s body,” I wanted to share my support for her as an openly (trans) woman who fought for this country. Yes, Kristin spent most of her years denying herself her true identification as a woman, and in so joined the Navy as an attempt for a “cure.” But she overcame her obstacles and granted herself her self-identification and self-acceptance.

And my love extends to all the vets and active duty persons in the military. But there is an unbridled appreciation and love for my LGBTQI-GNC people who have, and is currently active in (any branch of) the military. As I watched Kristin tell her story, I couldn’t help but think back to my own struggles trying to figure out who I was and fortunately I didn’t fall into the conformities of social patriarchy and denying myself the freedom of living my life outside of the status quo. So, for Independence Day I’m hoping people choose to do and be just that: INDEPENDENT. Living for you to be who and what you choose.

This also brings about the question of our country’s bigotry and hypocrisies that prove that LGBTQI-GNC people are dispensable when it comes to fighting for the country and risking lives, but we are not granted the equalities of any cis/heterosexual individual who wouldn’t even think of being in the military. So as I shake my head in disgust at ignorant politicians who feel that the very same people who fight so that their undeserving elitist asses can sit in legislation and pass their conservative illogical pedestal-like bullshit don’t deserve the same equality that any other person is given, I know that the irony is not lost on me.

Shifting gears: In the latest issue of the Black & Pink newspaper there was a section titled: “Advocacy: Help a Sister Out!” where there is a request to help an incarcerated B&P leadership circle-member by writing letters to the warden at Kern Valley State Prison. So I want everyone to do what they can to help her. Here is the info and sample letter to help out our sister Jenni Gann. Actually this is the whole article and what B&P is calling for people to do:

Hello everyone,

If you would like to write a letter to support Jenni, an incarcerated B & P Leadership Circle member, below is a sample letter. You can write to the Warden at the address below. Please note: This is not the correct address for Jenni, please do not write to her directly at the below address, it will not reach her, and will not help her cause. Though we all may feel anger and rage about these issues, calm and respectful letters will be most helpful at this time. Thank you everyone who can help out.

{ John Quintanilla’s murder by the state scheduled for TOMORROW [Texas, USA] }

from the Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement’s facebook page:

Please call stephen Tyler, the District Attorney in Victoria at (361)575-0468. Tell him you are glad he said he said he wanted to make sure John Quintanilla receives due process and therefore should investigate the false confession after police said his sister would be executed if she didn’t admit her husband’s killing in this case.

Source link

also i think DA Tyler’s email address might be STYLER@VCTX.ORG [source link], and his fax number is (361) 576-4139 according to this website: http://www.crimevictimsinstitute.org/directory/index.php?mode=ser&search=county&input=Victoria%20County

there’s also a Petition which apparently has Mr. Quintanilla’s blessing (also linked to in the above facebook post), and with more info:

With his sister being the mother of three children and pregnant with the fourth, it was then when officer Copeland talked to John’s mother that John decided to take responsibility for a murder he did not commit. He did not want his nephew and nieces to grow up in a broken family like himself and his siblings did.

John Quintanilla learnt everything about the robbery of the Action Amusement Center and the murder of Victor Billings second-hand from his brother-in-law, Rocky Edward Rodriguez. Rocky Edward Rodriguez knew first-hand what had happened at the Action Amusement Center because he committed the crime together with Jeffrey Alan Bibb and Joanie Marie Rodriguez.

Since John has never been at the crime scene himself and had no involvement in the crime whatsoever, the details he gave to the police in his false confession could not have been completely accurate. A ballistic expert during the trial said that the bullets and bullet cases found at the crime scene did not support John’s story of the events at the Action Amusement Center on 24th November 2002.

Other than this false confession, no other physical evidence was presented at trial which would have linked John Quintanilla to the crime:
• Despite John’s home being searched numerous times, neither the money taken during the robbery of the Action Amusement Center nor the clothes – especially the pantyhose masks – the robbers were wearing could ever be found.
• The gun which is considered to be the murder weapon could not be linked to the bullets found at the crime scene beyond any doubt.
• The positions of the bullets and bullet cases at the crime scene did not support the progressions of the robbery as John had described it in his confession.
• During trial not one single eye witness could identify John Quintanilla as the shooter of Victor Billings. The shooter was described as a white man, taller than 5’6” and weighing about 170 or more pounds. This description does not match John Quintanilla’s physical appearance at all, but fits perfectly on Rocky Edward Rodriguez.

Christopher: What can people do to help?

John: Letters of encouragement are always welcome, financial help is also. I would like to put together a defense fund, but I’m scared of failure or hoping things will work out and then everything busts.

  • “He coped badly with stress. At the time he bludgeoned Handspike to death, he was being held in a shared prison dormitory and was coming under physical and sexual harassment from other inmates.  ‘He couldn’t get away from the harassment. The incident was impulsive – he didn’t intend to kill Mr Handspike,’ Kammer said.”
  • “Richard Handspike, nephew of Joseph Handspike, speaking for the family, said that the death penalty should not have been imposed.”

[this is a re-post]

{ John Quintanilla’s murder by the state scheduled for July 16th [Texas, USA] }

from the Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement’s facebook page:

Please call stephen Tyler, the District Attorney in Victoria at (361)575-0468. Tell him you are glad he said he said he wanted to make sure John Quintanilla receives due process and therefore should investigate the false confession after police said his sister would be executed if she didn’t admit her husband’s killing in this case.

also i think DA Tyler’s email address might be STYLER@VCTX.ORG [source link].  EDIT: and his fax number is (361) 576-4139 according to this website: http://www.crimevictimsinstitute.org/directory/index.php?mode=ser&search=county&input=Victoria%20County

there’s also a Petition (also linked to in the above facebook post), and with more info:

Read More & Sign Petition at this link [WARNING for more talk of prison industrial complex & police intimidation/threats].  i would like to note that some bits of the way this was written seem iffy (such as “Although police officers as public role models are very unlikely to stretch the truth or even get facts wrong on purpose”, and calling Mr. Quintanilla’s attempt to protect his family “immature” later).  EDIT: the petition has his blessing — sorry for making assumptions.

interview with Mr. Quintanilla done by DRIVE:

Christopher: What can people do to help?

John: Letters of encouragement are always welcome, financial help is also. I would like to put together a defense fund, but I’m scared of failure or hoping things will work out and then everything busts.

Christopher: I appreciate this opportunity. Would you like to say anything else?

John: I appreciate you. If there’s anyone out there who would like to help, you can. There’s many ways and sometimes the smallest ways are enough to make a difference. I’d like to thank you all for your time and consideration. You can contact me directly at:

{ From CeCe, with love: Leslie Feinberg, Kristin Beck, and Jenni Gann [includes info on how to help Jenni Gann out — she is a prison inmate suffering transmisogynist sexual harassment by prison staff] }

-Ian, B & P Free World Leadership Circle
